Tournament tiers
Of the 65 total tournaments that take place along the Tour, they are not all equal in terms of importance or point value. The tiers of the ATP Tour, in descending value, are Grand Slams, ATP Finals, ATP 1000, ATP 500 and ATP 250.
- Grand Slams: The four biggest tournaments of the year, drawing in the biggest crowds, the most exclusive courts, and awarding 2,000 points to the winner. A player receives the Grand Slam achievement by winning all four of these tournaments. The Grand Slams are the Australian Open, Roland-Garros, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.
- ATP Finals: At years-end, this prestigious competition hosts the eight best singles players and doubles teams to compete in the ultimate tournament.
- ATP 1000: A series of nine tournaments that award 1,000 points to the winner. These tournaments are top-level, with more occurrences but half the points per title than the Grand Slams.
- ATP 500: 16 mid-tier tournaments, offering 500 points to the winners. Great opportunities for smaller/newer competitors to get some points on the board.
- ATP 250: The 30 entry-level tour events awarding 250 points to the winners.
